It’s the story of how a startup that is about to take on the pharmaceutical industry ended up making its medical equipment on a shoestring.
In fact, the company’s CEO, David Hirschfeld, who is also the co-founder of the medical equipment company Medical Devices, said he’s not the only one making these sorts of decisions.
“I think it’s an industry problem, but it’s also a challenge because we are competing with a bunch of people who are trying to do this for free,” Hirschfield said.
The startup, called HealthLink, is one of a handful of medical equipment startups hoping to disrupt the industry.
It offers a simple, affordable solution to one of the biggest health care problems: the lack of access to affordable medical equipment.
The company’s new product, which it called the Affordable Medical Equipment, is a portable electronic chest that can help patients with their oxygen therapy.
It uses an array of sensors and an array to detect changes in oxygen levels, and the devices use a custom-built software to analyze the data.
The devices are priced at under $100, and HealthLink says it has had success with a handful with high demand.
The company’s latest prototype, which is about a foot tall and weighs about a pound, can fit into a bag and is designed to fit over the chest, under the chest and over the nose.
The technology is also very secure, which Hirschfeld said was a big selling point of the company.
“The whole premise is that we don’t have any sort of hardware that has a chip embedded into it,” he said.
“We have a whole suite of technologies, all connected to the system that’s connected to a chip.
So we’re using a very low power chip and very high performance.”
In addition to the hardware, HealthLink also sells a software toolkit that can be used to create and modify the devices themselves.
Hirschfeld said HealthLink has been successful in getting some of its patients to accept the new devices.
“We’ve seen a significant number of patients say that they’re very happy with the device,” he added.
“But we’re also seeing a lot of people say that the device is not going to work for them,” Hesterfeld said.HISTORY OF THE COMPETITIONHealthLink was one of five medical equipment companies selected by the US Department of Health and Human Services in 2016 to join a pilot program aimed at helping patients pay for medical equipment at a discounted rate.
The five companies are Medical Devices Inc., HealthLink Medical Systems Inc., Medical Products Inc., Mylan NV, and U.S. Health & Medicines Administration.
The goal of the program was to help hospitals, doctors, pharmacies and hospitals themselves cut costs, Hirschbach said.
HealthLink’s technology was used in some of the trials.
“It was really a really small pilot program, and I think the biggest difference in the pilot is that there were no drug prices being added to the device price,” Hinklefeld said, referring to the program that helped push the company to the forefront of the market.
“And there were really no price increases in the hardware.”
HealthLink has also been part of a pilot effort in Massachusetts, the first state to make this sort of an affordable medical hardware program available to the public.
The state recently launched a pilot study of a variety of products, including a chest-sized device for the elderly, a chest implant that can detect heart disease and a chest pump that could help people with cardiac arrest.
The program is set to continue in Massachusetts until the end of 2019.
The HealthLink team is working with the Massachusetts Health Care Association, the Massachusetts Hospitals Association and the state’s Medicaid program to complete the pilot.
“There are a lot more hospitals in the state than there are people,” Hiserfeld said of the state, adding that a state-funded pilot program is the first step toward the kind of system he envisions.HOSPITAL ACCOUNTING HealthLink had its own health insurance plan through the Affordable Care Act, but Hirschberger said he didn’t want to make it a dealbreaker for his company.
In addition to getting the money back from the federal government, he said, he was going to need some kind of insurance.
The Massachusetts Health Account, which will pay the startup up to $100 a month, has a three-tier system that provides a variety the options.
The first tier is for people with private insurance and the second is for those with public insurance.
The third tier covers those with Medicare, which has a sliding scale for coverage.
HealthLink also has a Medicare Advantage plan.
It pays for the device itself, but the company does not provide any information about the cost of the device or its price.
Hospital accounts generally do not provide coverage for medical devices.
