The top-ranked eye doctor in Britain is in London this week to take part in a forum hosted by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and to promote the new Eye Care Summit.
Dr. Alex Dowsett, the chief executive officer of the Eye Care Trust, is one of a number of well-known doctors in the UK who have joined forces with the British Medical Association in an attempt to attract the eye care market.
“The UK has a large number of eyes that need eye care and it’s very difficult to find a top doctor with experience of the field in the country,” Dowseth said.
“The UK is also an emerging market for the NHS and the EyeCare Summit is a great opportunity for the profession to grow.”
According to the Eye Trust, the Eyecare Summit will bring together top experts in the field to discuss the latest research on eye care, as well as providing a forum to share best practice in the care of eyes and related conditions.
In the past few months, there have been numerous reports of people suffering from a wide range of eye conditions.
One study published in the British Journal of Ocular Medicine found that one in three people in the United Kingdom suffer from cataracts and some 30 percent of people in Britain suffer from glaucoma.
The World Health Organization reported last year that one out of three adults in the U.K. suffers from some form of eye health condition.
The World Health Assembly estimates that over half a billion people worldwide suffer from a health condition, which can affect their ability to see.
For those who suffer from some eye health conditions, eye care is an important part of their care, said Dr. Alex DeWitt, president of the British Eye Foundation.
“I have been working in eye care for almost 30 years and have witnessed first-hand the devastating impact on people’s health, and the potential for loss of vision.
So the fact that we are looking at an opportunity to grow our market and create jobs in the eyes is very exciting,” he said.
For now, the summit will focus on providing information on the latest advances in eye health, such as eye surgery, and on the importance of getting the best possible quality eye treatment.
Dr DeWatt hopes that the summit can help shape public health policy in the region, and provide a roadmap for the future.
“It’s an opportunity for people to come together, have a really good discussion, and try to look at what the options are, so that the public can have a better understanding of what’s out there,” he explained.
“We’re very excited about this opportunity and it would be great to be able to continue to work with the government and the business community to do this.”
