The sequel to the hit movie franchise is set to be the fastest-selling movie of the year in the United States, with its debut in theaters on Friday.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which hits theaters on Dec. 18, is expected to bring in $5.5 billion in its first weekend, a number that has been steadily increasing since its initial release in November.
The first weekend for the movie has been a huge success for Disney, which already has the franchise up for a sequel.
Star Trek Beyond, released in April, will come in second on the U:S.
box office chart behind Star Wars with its second weekend of $9.8 million.
Meanwhile, Disney is in second place in the global box office.
The Star Wars film grossed $4.2 billion worldwide in 2015, including $1.4 billion in China, and it will reach $8.7 billion worldwide this year.
The next two movies, Star Wars and Star Trek Into Darkness, will also debut in the $7.8 billion range this year, according to Box Office Mojo.
But the third movie, The Force Unleashed, is still a ways off.
That film is set for a November 3 debut, and that release is currently being pushed back to November 9 or later, according the studio.
It is expected that The Force Unite will hit theaters in December.
Disney’s strategy to get the franchise to theaters this weekend is a big win for the company, which is facing competition from rivals such as Amazon.
The movie is expected bring in more than $1 billion in revenue in its opening weekend, according Box OfficeMojo.
In fact, Disney and Lucasfilm have announced that Star Wars will open at least as big as the current record-holder, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.
That record-holding film opened in 2011 with $2.8b and went on to become the top grossing movie of all time.
The film has been highly profitable for Disney in the past, with Star Wars now coming in third in box office revenue.
Disney also has a number of Star Wars spinoffs on the horizon.
The third installment in the series, which also stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamil, John Boyega, and Lupita Nyong’o, will open in 2019.
In 2019, Star Trek: Discovery will follow in the same vein, with a new Star Trek series set to debut in 2020.
Disney is also set to release another Star Wars-themed movie in 2021, titled Star Wars Episode IX.
That movie is set in 2019, and the first trailer for the film has just been released.
Disney has been very bullish on the future of Star Trek, and is already planning to release a new movie in 2020 starring Harrison Ford, John Cho, and Daisy Ridley.
